Year Beast Sets Record for Peak Concurrent Reddit Complaints
— February 16, 2015Valve’s Year Beast Brawl game mode for its New Bloom festival has smashed records for the highest number of concurrent complaints on Reddit, narrowly edging out 2013’s Diretide event.
“Valve simply doesn’t understand what the Dota community wants,” said r/dota2 user MercurialSpectre. “Last year, we wanted to play a special game mode and not regular Dota, and this year we want to play regular Dota and not some special game mode.”
In both record-setting situations, the Dota 2 community’s mass hysteria was triggered by the absence of something they desired: Diretide in 2013 and regular Dota games and servers in 2015.
“Year Beast would be the perfect special event if you could queue for it at any time and the winning team received rating points instead of items,” said user NianCat322. “And instead of a Year Beast, both teams didn’t have a Year Beast.”
The New Bloom 2015 event features a random queue time, forcing hat-oriented players to wait patiently while the Year Beasts remain digitally dormant.
A Valve spokesperson added, “Dance, puppets.”
This year’s Year Beast concurrent complaints record was set partially due to the confluence of several other Dota 2 events, including the new hero Winter Wyvern, a patch that updated pathing, and the foot-and-dog-fetish appeasing Crystal Maiden arcana.
“If we’ve learned anything from the Manyfold Parallax Farseer’s Contact Genesis Molasses Event, it’s that players are more motivated to deny others’ items than obtain their own,” said industry expert Thibault Calonne. “Denying anything, whether it’s creeps or items, is what separates Dota from League of Legends.”
While Year Beast complaints have yet to reach Volvo, analysts predict that the unconnected Swedish automobile manufacturer may see an influx of feedback from the Dota 2 community within 24-48 hours.
